The Grams to Pounds Converter above turns any weight in grams into pounds as you type. It shows decimal pounds, the pounds and ounces format used on scales and birth announcements, total ounces, and kilograms. This guide covers the formula, how to split decimal pounds into pounds and ounces correctly, and the situations where this conversion comes up most.
How to convert grams to pounds
Divide the number of grams by 453.59237:
pounds = grams ÷ 453.592
Or multiply instead: pounds = grams × 0.00220462.
The pound used here is the international avoirdupois pound, defined as exactly 453.59237 grams since 1959. One kilogram is therefore about 2.2046 pounds, and the converter's answers are exact before rounding.
Worked examples
- 1,000 g to pounds: 1,000 ÷ 453.592 = 2.2046 lb, which is 2 lb 3.3 oz.
- 500 g to pounds: 500 ÷ 453.592 = 1.1 lb, or 1 lb 1.6 oz.
- 2,500 g to pounds: 2,500 ÷ 453.592 = 5.51 lb, or 5 lb 8.2 oz.
- 454 g to pounds: 1 lb, the standard "pound" package size.
Turning decimal pounds into pounds and ounces
A result like 5.51 lb is not 5 pounds 51 ounces, and it is not 5 pounds 5 ounces either. The decimal is a fraction of a pound, and a pound has 16 ounces:
- The whole number is the pounds: 5 lb.
- Multiply the decimal part by 16 to get ounces: 0.51 × 16 = 8.2 oz.
- Put them together: 5 lb 8.2 oz.
So 2.5 lb is 2 lb 8 oz, not 2 lb 5 oz. The converter does this step automatically, and carries 16 ounces into a whole pound so you never see a result like "1 lb 16 oz".

- Birth weights. Hospitals in most countries weigh babies in grams, while family and friends in the United States expect pounds and ounces.
- Shipping and parcels. Carriers price by weight bands in pounds or kilograms. Converting a 2,500 g parcel shows it is just over 5.5 lb.
- Recipes and groceries. European recipes and packaging use grams; US recipes and scales often use pounds.
- Fitness and luggage. Gym plates and airline limits are often given in kilograms, which are just thousands of grams.
Tips for converting grams to pounds
- For kilograms, move the decimal first. 2.5 kg is 2,500 g; enter that, or multiply kilograms by 2.2046 directly.
- Use the quick estimate carefully. Dividing grams by 450 is close, but for exact weights such as medication or postage, use the converter.
- Light items read better in ounces. Anything under about 450 g is easier to picture in ounces; see the Grams to Ounces Converter.
