The Grams to Ounces Converter above turns any weight in grams into ounces as you type, and shows the same weight in pounds and ounces, decimal pounds and kilograms. It uses the everyday ounce found on food labels, kitchen scales and postal rates. Below you will find the formula, examples from the kitchen, and the difference between the three kinds of "ounce" that cause most conversion mix-ups.
How to convert grams to ounces
Divide the number of grams by 28.349523125:
ounces = grams ÷ 28.3495
Or multiply instead: ounces = grams × 0.035274.
The ounce used here is the avoirdupois ounce, defined as exactly 28.349523125 grams, with 16 of them making one pound of 453.59237 grams. Both values are exact by international agreement, so the converter's answer is exact before rounding.
Worked examples
- 100 g to ounces: 100 ÷ 28.3495 = 3.53 oz.
- 250 g to ounces: 250 ÷ 28.3495 = 8.82 oz, about half a pound.
- 500 g to ounces: 500 ÷ 28.3495 = 17.64 oz, which is 1 lb 1.6 oz.
- 28 g to ounces: 0.99 oz, which is why recipes often treat 28 g as one ounce.
- 1,000 g (1 kg) to ounces: 35.27 oz, or 2 lb 3.3 oz.
Which ounce? Avoirdupois, troy and fluid
"Ounce" means three different things, and mixing them up is the most common reason a grams to ounces conversion looks wrong.
| Ounce | Measures | In grams | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avoirdupois ounce (oz) | Weight | 28.35 g | Food, groceries, postage, body weight |
| Troy ounce (ozt) | Weight | 31.10 g | Gold, silver and other precious metals |
| US fluid ounce (fl oz) | Volume | 29.57 mL | Drinks, liquids, cosmetics |
A troy ounce is about 10 percent heavier than a regular ounce: 31.1 grams is 1.097 everyday ounces. If you are pricing gold or silver, divide grams by 31.1035 instead.
A fluid ounce measures space, not weight, so grams can only be turned into fluid ounces if you know the density. For water, one gram takes up about one milliliter, so roughly 29.6 grams of water fills one US fluid ounce. Flour, sugar and oil all differ, which is why bakers weigh ingredients instead of measuring them by volume.
Grams to ounces in the kitchen
Most recipes from outside the United States list ingredients in grams, while many American kitchen scales and recipes use ounces. A few useful reference points:
- 113 g of butter is 3.99 oz, one US stick.
- 227 g is 8.01 oz, half a pound, a common package size for cheese and butter.
- 340 g is 11.99 oz, the 12 oz size used for many cans and bags.
- 454 g is 16.01 oz, one pound.
For baking, keep at least one decimal place. A difference of a few grams of salt, yeast or baking soda changes a recipe far more than the same difference in flour.
Tips for accurate conversions
- Round only the final answer. Using 28 instead of 28.35 is fine for a quick estimate but adds a 1.2 percent error.
- Use pounds and ounces above 16 oz. 35.27 oz is easier to read as 2 lb 3.3 oz, which the converter shows automatically.
- Check the label. "Net wt" is weight in ounces; "fl oz" is volume.
